Watches & Horology as a hobby: more than time

Most people wouldn’t initially think of watches as a hobby. It’s just something that tells the time, right? I got my first “real” watch when I was about 18 years old. It was a quartz Hamilton watch that I wore everyday, everywhere. Years later I saved up enough to buy my dream watch: the Omega Seamaster 300m. Ever since I’ve been somewhat obsessed with watches – my Instagram feed would prove it. It didn’t really stop there though – on the contrary – I became addicted to watches and now it’s one of my many passions.

What You’ll Need:

1. Knowledge:

To fully appreciate watches as a hobby, it’s essential to educate yourself about the different types of watches, movements, brands, and historical significance. Dive into books, online forums, and watch enthusiast communities to expand your understanding.

2. Timepiece Collection:

Start building your collection by acquiring watches that resonate with you personally. Whether you prefer vintage classics, modern marvels, or avant-garde designs, curate a collection that reflects your unique taste and style.

3. Maintenance Tools:

To keep your timepieces in pristine condition, invest in basic maintenance tools such as watch cleaning kits, spring bar tools, and a watch case opener. Regular maintenance ensures your watches remain accurate and functional for years to come.

My Experience:

The Journey Begins:

My fascination with watches began with my first “real” timepiece, a quartz Hamilton watch. From that moment on, I was hooked. Each watch in my collection tells a story – from the rugged reliability of my Omega Seamaster to the timeless elegance of my Rolex Datejust.

Building the Collection:

Over the years, I’ve carefully curated my watch collection, seeking out pieces that speak to me both aesthetically and emotionally. Each watch holds a special place in my heart, representing milestones, memories, and moments of sheer joy.

Connecting with Others:

One of the most rewarding aspects of my watch hobby is connecting with fellow enthusiasts. Whether swapping stories at watch meetups, discussing the latest releases on online forums, or admiring each other’s collections on social media, the sense of camaraderie within the watch community is unparalleled.

Pros & Cons:

  1. Timeless Elegance: Watches are more than just accessories; they’re expressions of personal style and craftsmanship.
